what the benjamins is this all about then?
It’s just a little website where I can post some thoughts and ideas about computer technology and my attempts to make music. Not a big thing. Occasionally I venture onto topics about which I am less of an expert (apart from horse racing, but I don’t write about that here anyway).
update (february 2025)
OK, so it used to go out by email to subscribers and i’m sorry but I just… i don’t know… i don’t want to be spamming everyone’s email inboxes with my stuff. here’s me so i reckon if you’re interested you know where to look.
why am i on substack?
February 2025 Update: It was a kinda’ nice and easy to set up blogging platform. Writers, poets, musicians and artists might still want to give it a go.
March 2024 Update: I moan quite a lot about Substack in certain threads. Substack has threads now, like Twitter. It even has direct messaging. Ultimately, it has a very similar business model to your big, bad social media apps: it’s a corporate animal. Despite its constant misleading hints, Substack is not a decentralised platform.
But it does seem quite a friendly place populated by creative, articulate people. That might just be my echo chamber, of course.
i don’t care about all that, ben. what’s the journal about?
February 2025 Update: The following is all fairly outdated too and will get updated in time when I know more about what my 2025 Substack is about.
Old: Mostly, this journal is about making music on a Windows PC using Ableton Live 12 with a Push 2 controller. It’s also about my attempts, successes and failures at making music (which you can find on Soundcloud or Spotify).
Making music on a computer can be quite difficult but the computer is a useful tool, especially if you’ve struggled to learn a more traditional musical instrument. I find that a lot of my posts end up sort of aimed at beginners to music-making using a personal computer. It’s partly why I began writing this (now two years old) journal. Less for clear, constructive guides (which I try to provide) as answering a few questions that rarely get answered around this subject. Cutting out the crap and trying to get to what really, actually works. If you’re struggling with making music on a PC, with the audio connections and set-up, plugins location, file management, this sort of thing, I like to think you would find this journal helpful.
Thanks for reading my about page.
